Fred Bates is a 67-year-old veteran, who has been interested in art his whole life. He has been influenced by many themes: Old masters to camera obscura; realism to Van Gogh; Vermeer to Picasso.
During his twenty-five years in the Army, time to paint did not come easily. Doodling was the name of the game.
Fred suffers from some injuries, mainly PTSD, and uses art to ease the effects of this. At present he is painting in oils, but loves art history and also using old techniques such as egg tempera and casein, and copying Old Masters.
