The Shop’s Retail Co-ordinator, Sue Dewhurst, picks her current favourite item of the week in The Shop:-
What are you most excited about stocking this week in The Shop?
There is so much to choose from, but it has to be Things of Wonder hand bound journals, each one with one of print-maker Holly’s images printed onto oilskin onto the front cover.
What is so special about this item for you?
Because I can’t sew to save my life, I appreciate any form of textiles - of which bookbinding is a special skill - and I also appreciate someone keeping traditional methods going whilst up-cycling. For me, these mini works of art hit all the points I am aiming for with our stock here at The Shop. High quality, affordable artworks appealing to everyone with an element of re-purposing.
What do you know about the artist and their techniques?
Holly is a print maker based in Teesdale. She uses traditional long-stitch techniques in the book binding - a method dating back to Egyptian times. She up-cycles tweed and leather in the making of these precious pieces and then puts a copy of her original lino cuts printed onto oilskin on the front. The result is a stunning item.
Who would these appeal to?
I think these would be fabulous graduation gifts or perhaps for a loved one going on their travels . They are ideal for men who are often tricky to buy for as well as women, young and old. I am a one for stationery and love art and I think these tick all the boxes and more. They are so tactile and practical too. Beautiful, pocket-sized works of art to inspire!
Things of Wonder’s hand bound leather journals are £32 each and available from The Shop with lots of designs to choose from.
