The Power of Water - Brian Burton
A series of paintings that respond to the influence of water in and on the environment and on us
Burton begins his research with frequent exploration on foot of his chosen subject, this is core to his artistic process. His ideas develop further via multiple sketches made on site before eventually progressing onto a painting. Each image produced is unique, there is no formula followed here though each is unified by his 'signature' subtlety of brushstroke: Layer upon layer of, sometimes ghostly, marks gradually build up to a painting of great depth.
His aim is to reconjure the essentials of the scene that initially inspired him, capturing atmosphere and movement. These are not realistic portraits of the landscape; instead they fall between realism and abstraction allowing the viewer to bring their own recollections and imagination into play.
Brian's muse is Water in all of her personalities: from her ability to calm us in a serene setting to leaving us awe struck at her destructive force, carving a route through ancient rockfaces.
