Northern Elements

Contemporary abstract and semi-abstract paintings of the northern landscape and seascape

Elemental are a group of four Cumbria-based artists who exhibit together. All the artists are landscape and seascape painters, each has a different approach to their subject:

Sam Harrison conveys the feelings she experiences in the landscape through her paintings, which are based on the actual colours, textures, and shapes she has observes and abstracts to capture the overall sense of being out in the landscape.

Jan Morley has developed her own unique style – inspired by the colours, light and reflections in the landscapes around her. she enjoys working quickly to get into the flow; capturing the immediacy, vibrancy and life of the moment.

Sarah W Brown sees colour and pattern as the key elements in her paintings. She is happiest when she can combine these to create powerful moods and emotions. She works by intuition and the resulting contemporary paintings sit somewhere between realism and imaginative interpretation.

Lynn Fotheringham uses ‘slow looking’ to take in the full pleasure and immensity of the northern landscape. Her paintings aren’t passive observation; they're about the movement within the landscape and the layers of natural and human intervention that continues to shape it.
