12 Views of Kisdon - Richard Walls

A series of photographs accompanied by short essays about Kisdon Hill, written by those with a close relationship to this special fell in Upper Swaledale.

The name Kisdon is ancient, predating the arrival of the Norse settlers who gave their language to much of Upper Swaledale. Some believe the name is Old English in origin, dun meaning hill. Some say the name travels back earlier still to the days of the iron age Celts and means “little Hill”. If so then Kisdon is well named, overlooked as it is by the higher fells that surround it. Despite its lack of height there’s no doubt that Kisdon possesses some special quality that sets it apart, both physically and emotionally. Locals and visitors alike feel the hill's pull, their passion for Kisdon far surpassing its size. The people who've grown up beneath it; those who walk across it, those that farm it, those who've lived high on its flanks, those who capture it in paint or on a photograph, those who want to understand what made it, those who protect it; all these people, knowingly or unwittingly, have fallen under its spell, their lives enriched through the experience. Each has their own story to tell; their own perspective. I share that passion. To me Kisdon is the heart of Upper Swaledale.

Richard is a landscape photographer living and working in the Yorkshire Dales. Through his photographs he hopes to convey his own sense of wonder about the Upper Swaledale Landscape, and connect with those who feel the same way.
