“Everyday problems require exceptional skills and Knowledge”
People talk about physical illness. They give advice, empathise, identify with, pass on suggestions and offer help. If they themselves have not been affected by the illness, it is probable that know someone who has. There is usually concern and open dialogue.
With mental health it is different. It is less easily admitted (or indeed recognised) and it is often greeted with embarrassment and unease.
Many people suffering from mental illness remain silent for a variety of reasons – guilt, trust, embarrassment, a belief that no one will believe them, fear, shame, stigma, a sign of weakness, but what is clear is that not being able to confide in another person is high on the list.
The aim of the workshop is to help participants develop practical skills to step in and support a person who needs assistance.
The course won’t teach you or indeed expect you to be a psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellor or therapist. It will give you confidence to empower someone to access the support they need for recovery or successful management of their symptoms whilst keeping yourself safe.
